Errachidia is the perfect base for exploring south-east Morocco. Palm valleys, fossil towns, mountain gorges and the Sahara dunes are all within a few hours. So, if you rent a car, you can see far more than on an organised tour. Here are the six best road trips from Errachidia, with distances, driving times and tips for each one.
1. The Ziz Valley and the Meski Blue Spring
- Distance: about 20 km south of Errachidia
- Ideal for: a half-day trip or your first afternoon
First, follow the Ziz Valley south from Errachidia, one of the longest palm groves in Morocco. Then stop at the Meski Blue Spring (Source Bleue de Meski), a natural spring surrounded by palm trees. In addition, the viewpoints over the valley are beautiful in the late afternoon light.
2. Erfoud and Rissani
- Distance: about 74 km to Erfoud and 95 km to Rissani
- Driving time: about 50 minutes to Erfoud, then 20 minutes to Rissani
Erfoud is famous for its fossil and marble workshops, where you can see the local stone being cut and polished. Afterwards, continue to Rissani, the historic heart of the Tafilalet region, and explore its traditional market. As a result, this is a great day trip for anyone interested in local culture. 3. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes
- Distance: about 127 km
- Driving time: about 1 hour 50 minutes
This is the classic desert road trip. The road is paved all the way via Erfoud and Rissani, and the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon as you approach Merzouga. Most visitors stay at least one night in a hotel or desert camp. For the full route, see our Errachidia to Merzouga by car guide.
4. The Ziz Gorges and Midelt
- Distance: about 138 km north
- Driving time: about 2 hours
Heading north, the road passes the Hassan Addakhil lake and then enters the dramatic Ziz Gorges, including the famous Legionnaire’s Tunnel. Finally, it climbs towards Midelt, a mountain town known for its apples and its views of the Atlas. However, the road can be cold in winter, so check the weather first. See our car rental for Midelt page.
5. Tinghir and the Todra Gorge
- Distance: about 137 km west to Tinghir
- Driving time: about 2 hours to Tinghir
Drive west through Goulmima and Tinejdad to Tinghir, a large oasis town surrounded by palm groves. From there, a short drive north takes you into the Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls rise high on both sides of the road. In fact, it is one of the most photographed places in southern Morocco, so leave early to enjoy it before the crowds.
6. A multi-day desert and gorges loop
If you have three days or more, combine the highlights. For example, drive from Errachidia to Merzouga on day one, spend the night in the desert, and then head west to the Todra Gorge via Erfoud and Tinejdad. On the last day, return to Errachidia. As a result, you see the dunes, the oases and the gorges in one trip. Alternatively, you can continue west to Marrakech with a one-way rental.
Which car should you rent for these road trips?
All of these routes use paved roads, so any car in our fleet can do them. For example, the Dacia Sandero is ideal on a budget, while the Dacia Duster SUV is the most comfortable for long days and a lot of luggage. If you prefer an automatic, choose the Hyundai Accent.
